Kayak

Maria Lloyd
I am fascinated by ancient civilisations, their cultures and how they created ceremonial art forms and objetcs to distinguish Themselves and document their histories. By Unravelling their mysteries we inevitably learn more about ourselves.
Medium: Wine barrel oak and bronze
200 x 260 mm ( 20 mm thick )
This indoor sculpture by New Zealand sculptor Maria Lloyd is a graceful combination of bronze and timber, blending organic warmth with enduring solidity.
The work takes the form of a stylized kayak, carved from smooth, elongated timber with a hollowed center that suggests both the vessel and a body’s resting place.
Set within the cavity is a simplified bronze figure, represented as a rounded head atop a geometric torso—minimalist yet immediately recognizable.
A single bronze paddle crosses the body diagonally, uniting figure and vessel, evoking both the act of movement and the meditative stillness of being held by water.
The contrast of materials—the natural grain of wood against the dark patina of bronze—underscores the dialogue between nature and permanence, fragility and endurance.
Hung vertically, the piece emphasizes the kayak’s form as both an object of travel and a symbol of journey, balancing functionality and metaphor.
The sculpture reflects Maria Lloyd’s hallmark style: playful in its simplicity, yet resonant with deeper themes of connection, exploration, and the human relationship with the natural world.
