he Torso of Brooke presents a finely orchestrated interplay of form, depth, and materiality. Carved from meticulously layered wood, the figure emerges from its marbled background with a sculptural presence that feels both contemporary and timeless. The rhythmic contours of the laminated layers emphasise the natural curves of the female torso, creating a visual vibration that shifts with the viewer’s angle and the movement of light.
The work occupies a space between sculpture and painting: the recessed backdrop—rich with swirling, stone-like colours—acts as a luminous ground, while the projecting body extends forward as though caught in the process of materialising. The absence of head and limbs focuses attention entirely on the sensuous architecture of the torso itself, inviting contemplation of form, balance, and the expressive power of partial figures.
Framed in dark stained timber, The Torso of Brooke becomes a self-contained object of quiet intensity. It celebrates Olivier Duhamel’s distinctive language of layered construction, where precision meets sensuality and where the human body is reimagined as landscape, geometry, and sculpture all at once.
